virtuo’s top non-coronavirus related recommendations

Sit back and enjoy our feel good weekly

Written by Freddie Roux

Hopefully you're sailing through this period, using the time to do things you've planned to do but never got around to. Perhaps you're now working out daily and eating more thoughtfully. If you're struggling to keep afloat then please reach out to us. With all the rather heavy news that is going on at the moment, we wanted to try and provide a bit of joy. We've been putting our heads together to come up with our top bits of news, recommendations and ideas and we promise none our coronavirus related!

"Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don't"

What we’ve been listening to...

James O'Brien's Mystery Hour

If you’re looking for some light entertainment then you’ve got to check out James O’Brien’s Mystery Hour. You’ll find a backlog of time agnostic episodes that you can stick on whether alone or with your loved ones. The concept sounds so simple, but the results are amazing: callers ring up with a question that is buzzing away in the back of their head and another caller (who possesses the necessary qualifications) rings up to answer it. No googling, no looking stuff up, just a pure celebration of knowledge.

"Do animals have accents?"

For facts like this and more, the podcast is your one stop shop for trivial facts, so sit back and enjoy the rollercoaster journey that you’ll be taken on in the pursuit for useless bits of information. I’ve attached a short clip below so you can get a flavour.

What to do with all that pasta...

Probably the most in-demand item right now (maybe second to toilet roll) is pasta. Everyone has stockpiled as much as possible due to it being non-perishable. However, now everyones got it stocked up in their cupboards, but the question is what to do with it? Well, fear not SLman have teamed up with Big Mama group and put together a list of nine dribble inducing pasta dishes for you to enjoy. Dig in!

What you should definitely watch...

The Stranger

I went into work and I received the question ‘have you seen the stranger?’, had a quick drink with a friend who asked ‘you watching the stranger?’, and finally I got a call from my mum and you’ll never guess what she asked me ‘you seen that new show on Netflix called ‘The Stranger’. I almost wanted to not watch it based on this (i’m cool like that), but eventually gave into the peer pressure and put on the stranger.

The premise of the show is that a Stranger approaches different, unwitting people going about their business and delivers a secret that turns their world upside down. From there, the main character is thrown into a whirlwind of mystery as he embarks on his quest to find answers. So get watching so you can just say yes when you get the inevitable question ‘have you seen the stranger?’

What we've been reading...

Something I've never really been in tune with is physics and even more so with astrology. Given the current time I have on my hands in the evening and the fact that pollution levels are almost 50% lower, I thought now could be a great time to do what I’ve always wanted to do: watch natures TV! A recent article I read helped me do exactly that, reframing how I viewed the stars and our solar system. The stars will be the best series you ever watch (although, have you seen the stranger?)

What app we recommend right now...

Momentum

Sleep, meditation, saving money - these are all things we know we should do but struggle to consistently achieve. At school I remember getting magic stars stuck on a piece of paper if I did something good, looking back it seems so silly yet it worked so successfully. If you had a similar experience, then this app is for you. It brings motivation in abundance by helping track habits and boost will power to help you achieve your goals. It’s the perfect app to help you stay focused during this unprecedented period!

If you've any other motivation habits - drop us a message on Instagram and we will share our favourites.

What you should do this weekend

You’re probably looking for something to do this weekend after a long week of staying at home. Well, don’t worry i’ve put together a list of different places to visit this weekend. Check it out:

On a serious note, this is definitely a stressful time for all of us and it is easy for our mental health to take a toll. It is a really good idea to have a routine in times like these and an even better idea to fit some sort of mindfulness activity. Meditation is great but some people prefer to be active and so yoga can be a great way to shout. Attached is a great beginners session to try out.

Quick thinking of the week award - Patty and Bun & HG Walter!

The Virtuo team are big on burgers, I don’t mean we’re overweight, we just love to indulge in a burger. From vegan, chicken to beef burgers, we have worked our way across the majority of burger places in London (and much of the UK!). One our favourites, Patty and Bun have teamed up with HG Walter to create a lockdown kit, where you can make one of their famous burgers, from the comfort of your own home. (Only available in London)

What virtuo is doing to help

Finally, we’ve been thinking of how best we can play our part in the tremendous effort that is going into the coronavirus fight. We are providing 50 free cars to NHS doctors and nurses to use during this challenging time. If you know of anyone on the NHS frontline who needs a car, then please just give us a shout either via social media or on our in-app chat. A massive thanks goes out to everyone who is tirelessly working to make sure we get through this period!
